Whether you are mid-renovation or moving across the country, a storage unit is your best friend for keeping the chaos at bay. At Flex Moving & Storage, we offer both traditional warehouse storage and our signature Flex trailers—mobile units that sit right in your driveway for maximum convenience.

But a storage unit is only as good as the way you pack it. To help you avoid a "box-alanche" and ensure your items stay in peak condition, follow these essential do’s and don’ts.

The do’s: how to pack like a pro

Do think vertically

Our Flex trailers and units offer plenty of height. Make the most of it by stacking your sturdiest, heaviest boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top. If your sofa has a solid frame, consider standing it on its end to reclaim valuable floor space.

Do create a path to the back

Don’t pack yourself into a corner. Leave a small aisle down the middle of the unit or trailer. You’ll be thankful you did when you realize that one "must-have" document is in the very first box you loaded.

Do use consistent box sizes

Tossing a mix of random grocery store boxes together is a recipe for a leaning tower of trouble. Using uniform, high-quality boxes makes stacking safer and more efficient, ensuring you get more "bang for your buck" out of the square footage.

Do label every single side

In a dark storage unit, being able to see a label from any angle is a game-changer. Be specific: instead of "Basement," try "Basement: Holiday lights and ornaments."

The don’ts: mistakes to avoid

Don’t store "no-go" items

It might be tempting to toss everything in, but never store perishables, plants, or hazardous materials. Things like propane tanks, paint thinners, or food items can cause safety risks or attract unwanted pests.

Don’t wrap wood or leather in tight plastic

While plastic wrap is great for a quick move, it can trap moisture over time. For long-term storage, use breathable moving blankets or specialized furniture covers to prevent mold and mildew from settling into your favorite armchair.

Don’t lean heavy items against walls

Try to leave an inch of space between your items and the walls of the unit or trailer. This allows air to circulate, which is the best defense against moisture buildup and musty smells.

Don’t forget about weight balance

Since our Flex trailers are mobile, weight distribution matters. Avoid putting all your heavy appliances on one side. Keeping the weight centered and low ensures the trailer remains stable and safe if it needs to be moved.

The Flex storage advantage

Moving and storage don't have to be a headache. Whether you need a trailer at your door or a spot in our secure facility, we’ve got you covered.
